Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. The real advancement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
