Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting array of betting options and because you have several players shooting for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
