Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor on the globe by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the best poker players on the planet.
Phil started competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and winning was not a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an undying passion for poker. Phil says that he is learning every day and is very humble about his achievements. He knows he makes blunders every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
