Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of betting choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
