Omaha Hi/Low: General Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
