Poker chips have been manufactured from a varied selection of materials in an almost endless variety of styles since the birth of wagering and the requirement to track winnings. The most common materials used today in the creation of new poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylic composite. Clay chips, the oldest of the group, have been made in the US since the late 1800s.
Back in the 1800s, poker enthusiasts seemed to use any tiny valuable object imaginable. Early poker enthusiasts at times employed rough gold pieces along with chips – mainly made of wood and clay. By the 20th century, poker chip designs started to enjoy a bigger prominence, and the smooth edges of older chips gave way to chips with slits to keep them neatly piled up together.
There is little or no debate that poker has grown constantly in popularity since its beginnings in the 1800s. With the explosive growth of net gaming and unique TV shows, community appeal in poker has feed the fire faster than ever before. Most folks are first introduced to poker by television showssuch as Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or "Poker After Dark," and many will participate in their first hands on the net. Despite net poker’s growth, not much replaces the feeling of holding weighty poker chips in your hands, throwing chips into the middle of a poker table, or stacking high pilesstacks of chips after displaying a victorious hand.
