Do you ever get that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the nearest gambling establishment, to discover a high stakes game of Holdem, to sit at a Black-jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I love to scratch it.
I also love to watch folks gamble. No 2 poker faces seem identical. When I wager I like to think I put on a poker face which is impassable. Except I know I have specific mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I play poker or Black jack. And then I chain smoke. Except I chain smoke no matter whether I am winning or losing, whether I’ve a beneficial hand or bad.
I once wagered within a weekly poker game. The game was generally five card draw. There was a gentleman who wagered with us every week who generally wore a hat. When he was dealt a beneficial hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and playing with his hat. Pointless to say, he never won.
The very best poker gambler I ever saw was a player who created much more actions and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Always an high priced suit and tie, footwear shined and nails trimmed. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pants or rubbings his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to study him for hours. I’d attempt to see if I could spot his tell. Choosing fuzz off his jacket- did this mean he was bluffing? Arranging his chips within a short pile – did this imply he had a very good hand?
Many years later I ran into him within a bar in Chicago, il and we had a beverage. I asked him if he had been aware of all those actions he created or if they were subconscious. He informed me that each single thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everybody is often checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are trying to spot the the tell.
So his technique was to provide them lots to consider about. His thinking was if they have been pondering about him picking a piece of lint off his vest and what it meant they certain weren’t thinking about their cards.
His technique was distraction. And it worked for him. By no means give up a system that works for you.
